Somatics, Simplified! Where Ortho and Neuro Meet!
Retrain the brain, NOT the tissues!
Have you ever been frustrated, as a clinician, when you can’t seem to get your clients out of persistent, chronic pain? I know I was! As an Occupational Therapist of 25 years, it was frustrating when I did all the things I knew, used all my tools, modalities, and techniques, and I still couldn’t get people past their pain sometimes. It seems it’s becoming more common to have even high school athletes develop deep pain patterns. And people are having more and more surgeries, and at younger ages. After doing some training in many techniques, which are all wonderful, something seemed to be missing. Enter Somatics, neuromuscular retraining for physical issues, for persistent pain. It actually seems silly to me now, that we don’t include the brain when treating muscles. Muscles don’t do anything without the brain. We also develop reflex patterns, from the core, guttural responses, due to stress/trauma. Somatics teaches us how to help our clients, and ourselves, how to release these stored reflexive patterns, so that we can move well again. It helped me get out of pain and avoid neck surgery. This work can change how you look at movement, and help more clients (and maybe yourself too!)
